Book 56: Sisters in the Wilderness: The Challenge of Womanist God-Talk by Delores S. Williams

Although I had read some womanist theology books before seminary, the white shallowness of my graduate-level studies drove me read more with more enthusiasm on my own. Several books and articles mentioned Sisters in the Wilderness, with Wilda Gafney praising it the most, so I read it for the first time around 2018. This was my third time reading it.

This book is THE book on Hagar, the enslaved woman of Abraham & Sarah in the book of Genesis. Williams describes both the historical, cultural, and theological nuances of the story and also their significance for Black women in the United States. And when it comes to applying scripture to real life, I recommend this above many other more academic books.
