Book 55: Beyond Belief: The discovery of my existence by Christina M. Hollis
A local friend of mine told me about Hollis, a transwoman from Scales Mound, IL who published her memoir back when that was very rare. The friend used to live in Hollis' farmhouse and acquired many copies of the book, and she gave me some to distribute to those who would benefit from them. This was a couple years ago, and now was the second time I read the book.
Hollis' isolation and lack of support are palpable throughout the memoir. She lived a remarkable life, she was the town auctioneer and visited every continent, but here are pages of depression and struggle. It's a difficult but important book. I'm honored to know her story and to have a few copies.
